Mr. Hillary in the 5th Anniversary of Whisper To Humanity

How a Partnership Transformed My Classroom and My Community

It still feels surreal to write these words: The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) recognized me, Mr. Nwaigwe Hillary Okoro, as the Best Secondary School Teacher of the Year 2025! The recognition is for outstanding teaching excellence, dedication, and exceptional contribution to education right here in our Ugwulangwu community.

This isn’t a trophy for my effort alone; it’s a celebration of a fundamental shift in my teaching philosophy, a shift that started the moment I connected with the incredible Whisper Team. Before them, I was teaching the curriculum. After them, I started teaching my students.

The Whisper Team inspired an inner drive in me, urging me to look beyond rote instruction and truly connect with the young minds in my classroom. My students’ goal accomplishment became the beating heart of my work. This meant prioritizing the need to be a more positive teacher and, crucially, a more positive man.

I started consciously acknowledging that my students, especially the young male ones, deserve a better reflection of positive masculinity and leadership. We are, after all, their first role models. Every day became an opportunity to model empathy, responsibility, and intentional leadership. It was a conscious effort, done with no expectation of recognition, simply because it was the right thing to do for my community and my learners.

And yet, someone was watching! My commitments were noticed, leading to the recommendation that resulted in this immense honor.

To the Whisper Team: thank you. You have been a constant source of support for us teachers at Ugwulangwu Secondary School. We are continually learning better ways to transform not just our educational practices but our own lives, ensuring we contribute to a better world. This award belongs to all of us who believe in teaching with heart and dedication.
